Energy for Alaska
  • German engineers play lead role in construction of production infrastructure
  • Heavy-lift vessel MS Svenja being prepared in the port of Singapore for use in Alaska

Luxembourg, 28 April 2015: Deutsche Oel & Gas S.A. is currently pressing full speed ahead with the establishment of its own production infrastructure in its Kitchen Lights Unit natural gas and crude oil production region. In addition to constructing the production platform, the subsea pipelines and the processing plant are also to be completed over the coming months in the Cook Inlet in Southern Alaska. In order to be able to successfully execute this large-scale project, which represents an investment of more than USD 300 million, Deutsche Oel & Gas S.A. Is counting on two internationally renowned partners from Germany: Overdick GmbH & Co. KG and HeavyLift@Sea GmbH.

The team from Overdick ranks among the world’s leading offshore engineering experts. The German engineering company has been tasked with managing the project in the Kitchen Lights Unit. From the planning, through the design, to the construction of the production platform in Southern Alaska, the installation programme devised in 2014 was carefully scrutinised and continuously optimised.

The world’s leading offshore and heavy-lift shipping company, HeavyLift@Sea, specialises in the maritime transport of heavy-lift and project cargo. With its 16 state-of-the-art offshore and heavy-lift vessels, HeavyLift@Sea has one of the largest special fleets in the world.

One of these special-purpose ships, the MS Svenja, is currently being prepared in the port of Singapore for its journey to Southern Alaska, where it will later install the production platform. With an unladen weight of 12,975 tons, a total length of 128.5 metres and a total crane lifting capacity of 2,000 tonnes (distributed between 2 cranes), the MS Svenja is one of the largest heavy-lift vessels in the world.

“The fact that we are using a heavy-lift vessel such as the MS Svenja highlights the size and scale of our project in Southern Alaska and the logistical effort that is involved,“ explained Kay Rieck, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Deutsche Oel & Gas S.A. “With Overdick and HeavyLift@Sea, we have the support of two highly experienced and prestigious partners, whose high level of professionalism creates the ideal foundation for successfully establishing our own production infrastructure.”
